The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc (RBS or RBS Group) was an international banking and financial services company. On 22 July 2020 it was renamed NatWest Group plc, the change of name having been registered at Companies House in Edinburgh with effect from that date, and its shares traded on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker NWG from 23 July 2020; www.rbs.com now redirects to www.natwestgroup.com. The Royal Bank of Scotland name continues as a customer brand of the group. The group provides a full range of products and services to personal, commercial, corporate and institutional customers through two primary subsidiaries: The Royal Bank of Scotland plc and National Westminster Bank (NatWest) as well as through a number of brands including Ulster Bank, Coutts & Co, Isle of Man Bank, Lombard, Holt's (the bank of the British Armed Forces) and RBS International (offshore bank). Drummonds, Child & Co and Adam & Co, formerly among the group's private banking brands, are no longer listed among its brands, while Evelyn Partners and FreeAgent have been added. At December 31, 2025, the group employed 59,000 people (excluding temporary staff) and served over 20 million customers. In 2008, the UK Government became the majority shareholder of the Group taking a 58% stake in RBS ordinary shares. In 2015, the Government began the process of selling shares back to the private sector, reducing its ownership of ordinary shares from 61% to 52%. The government stake in RBS peaked at 84.4%. HM Treasury's holding fell from 9.99% at December 31, 2024 to zero on May 30, 2025, when the final shares were sold under its trading plan and the government completed its exit from the group. In March 2015, Royal Bank of Scotland sold Coutts International to Union Bancaire Privée (UBP), the family-owned Swiss private bank. RBS Group kept Coutts' UK arm, which has the British royal family among its customers and which remains a brand of NatWest Group. In October 2015, RBS sold its final 21% stake in Citizens Financial Group. As of March 31, 2017, RBS Group had total assets of £783.3 billion, loans and advances to customers of £326.7 billion and customer deposits of £351.5 billion. At December 31, 2025, NatWest Group reported total assets of £714.6 billion.
