Nationwide Building Society

Nationwide Building Society is the largest mutual building society in the world, the UK's largest retail deposit taker and the UK's second largest residential mortgage provider, with residential mortgage balances of £286.3 billion and a 16.3% share of the market as of March 31, 2026. It is the leading retail financial services company in the country with around 19 million members, a network of 605 Nationwide branches and 91 Virgin Money branches, and over 26,000 employees. Nationwide provides a wide range products and services including current and savings accounts, credit cards, personal loans, mortgages, investments, internet banking as well as home insurance, car insurance, travel insurance, landlord & business insurance and life insurance. As of March 31, 2026, it had £382.3 billion in total assets, up from £367.9 billion a year earlier, £217.1 billion in member deposits and £311.5 billion in loans and advances to customers. Nationwide Building Society was established in 1846 and is headquartered in Swindon with administration offices in Northampton, Bournemouth and Dunfermline.

Nationwide completed the acquisition of Virgin Money on October 1, 2024, recognising a gain of £2.3 billion on the purchase. The High Court sanctioned the Part VII transfer scheme on February 23, 2026, and the transfer of the majority of Clydesdale Bank PLC's business into the Society took effect on April 2, 2026, with Clydesdale's banknote issuance business remaining outside the transfer. Nationwide has said that all 605 Nationwide branches and 91 Virgin Money branches will remain open until at least January 1, 2030.
