Barclays operated in Egypt from 1864 and served more than 100,000 customers through a network of about 60 branches. Barclays was the first bank in the country to offer comprehensive banking services for SMEs. Moreover, it was the country’s first bank to offer a range of Standard, Prestige and Premier services to retail customers. Barclays no longer runs a bank in Egypt: the Barclays PLC Annual Report 2025 lists no Egyptian subsidiary, and Egypt is not among the countries operated by Absa Group, which took over most of the former Barclays banks in Africa.

Barclays began operating in Botswana in 1950, when an agency was opened in Lobatse. Barclays Bank of Botswana offered retail and commercial banking and credit cards and, employing 1,200 people, served customers through a network of 40 branches and 115 ATMs, the most extensive network in Botswana (2017). Barclays Bank of Ghana, once the biggest foreign bank in the country, had a retail and commercial banking network of over 55 branches, 10 Prestige Centres, 3 Agencies, 2 Premier Suites and more than 155 ATMs in all regional capitals and major towns, and formed part of the Barclays Africa Group of 10 African markets (2017). Barclays Bank Tanzania (BBT) was established in 1925 and operated in the country until 1967 when its operations were nationalised to become the now National Bank of Commerce (NBC). With the opening of the economy in 1990s, Barclays PLC made a decision to re-enter the Tanzania market in 2000. BBT had about 20 branches, 50 ATMs, more than 400 employees and over 100,000 customers. Barclays no longer owns the bank, which is now part of Absa Group and trades under the Absa Bank name.

Barclays Bank of Uganda Limited was one of the five largest commercial banks in Uganda. It opened the first branches, at Jinja and Kampala, in 1927, and in 2007 Barclays acquired Nile Bank and expanded its footprint. The bank employed about 1,000 people and served over 350,000 customers through 42 branches and 65 ATMs. Barclays Bank Uganda provided a wide spectrum of banking products to retail, corporate and SME customers, including current and savings accounts, personal and business loans, debit and credit cards, internet and mobile banking, trade finance and treasury services. Barclays no longer owns the bank, which is now part of Absa Group and trades under the Absa Bank name.

Barclays was the leading private sector bank in Seychelles. It operated there from 1959 and was closely associated with all phases of the country's development. The country is comprised of approximately 115 islands spread over a large area of the western Indian Ocean 1,000 miles due east of Kenya. The local currency is the Seychelles Rupee. Barclays had the largest branch and ATM network in the country, with a presence on the three main islands: Mahe (two branches, one agency, commercial banking centre and 11 ATMs), Praslin (two branches and 3 ATMs) and La Digue (1 branch and 1 ATM).
