SunTrust Banks, Inc. (formerly NYSE: STI), formed in 1985, was one of the largest financial services companies in the United States. SunTrust Bank was the principal subsidiary of the company. At December 31, 2017 it had 23,785 full-time equivalent employees and operated 1,268 full-service banking offices, with ATMs in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, the District of Columbia and Florida. The company operated through two business lines: Consumer Banking and Wholesale Banking. In 2017, the company combined Consumer Banking, Private Wealth Management (PWM) and Mortgage Banking into a single Consumer unit. As of September 30, 2017, SunTrust Banks, Inc. had total assets of $208.3 billion, deposits of $162.7 billion and net loans of $142.5 billion. SunTrust ceased to exist as an independent company on December 6, 2019, when it merged with BB&T Corporation to form Truist Financial Corporation.

Truist Financial Corporation. BB&T Corporation and SunTrust Banks, Inc. completed a merger of equals on December 6, 2019, creating Truist Financial Corporation (NYSE: TFC), at the time the sixth-largest U.S. commercial bank. The FDIC records SunTrust Bank (certificate 867) as inactive from December 7, 2019, closed by merger without assistance into Truist Bank (certificate 9846) of Charlotte, North Carolina. The heritage brands were withdrawn during the subsequent systems conversion, and www.suntrust.com now redirects to www.truist.com. As of June 30, 2026, Truist Bank reported total assets of $548.3 billion, deposits of $419.2 billion and 1,931 domestic offices.
