Sterling Bank was established in 1974 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas. The Bank was formerly known as Jersey Village Bank and changed its name to Sterling Bank in 1989. Sterling Bank was a wholly owned subsidiary of Sterling Bancshares Inc., a Houston-based bank holding company with total assets of $5.2 billion. It operated 58 branches in the greater metropolitan areas of Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Fort Worth, Texas.

In 2011, Comerica acquired Sterling Bancshares for $1.03 billion, strengthening its franchise in the Lone Star State. Comerica has over 140 banking centers throughout Texas.
