American Express Centurion Bank

American Express Centurion Bank (AmEx Centurion Bank) was a state chartered banking institution, renamed American Express National Bank on April 1, 2018. A subsidiary of credit card and travel giant American Express, the Bank offered a wide range of charge and credit cards in the United States including the Blue, Blue Cash, Blue Sky, Gold, Platinum, and Centurion cards. It also offered certificates of deposit to retail and institutional customers. As of March 31, 2017, American Express Centurion Bank had total assets of $34.496 billion and total deposits of $18.313 billion. The Bank was established on March 20, 1989 and was based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The company operated as a subsidiary of American Express Travel Related Services Company and employed about 170 people. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. insures deposit accounts up to $250,000.

American Express Centurion Card (also known as American Express Black Card) is an invitation-only card with an initiation fee of $7,500 and an annual membership fee of $2,500.

American Express National Bank

Effective April 1, 2018 American Express Centurion Bank was renamed American Express National Bank. On the same date it converted from a Utah state charter to a national banking association supervised by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, became a member of the Federal Reserve System, and absorbed American Express Bank, FSB (FDIC certificate 35328). The renamed bank carries forward FDIC certificate 27471 and the March 20, 1989 establishment date of American Express Centurion Bank. As of June 30, 2026 it had total assets of $213.946 billion and total deposits of $171.555 billion.
