Forex Bank AB

FOREX AB, which traded as Forex Bank AB from 2003 to 2021, is a foreign exchange and payment services company operating in the Nordic region. The company dates its founding to 1965, when Rolf Friberg took over the currency exchange office run by the state railway operator SJ at Stockholm Central Station, and until the early 1990s it was the only company besides the banks that was licensed by Bank of Sweden to trade in currencies. Today, it is one of the world’s biggest foreign exchange bureaus with a turnover of more than SEK 20 billion. Forex Bank was granted a Swedish banking licence in 2003 and offered loans, private and savings accounts, credit and debit cards, cash services, money transfers as well as online, mobile and telephone banking. In May 2021, after 17 years as a bank, the company transferred the bulk of its deposit and lending business to ICA Banken and reverted to the name FOREX. The company register maintained by Finansinspektionen, the Swedish financial supervisory authority, now lists the entity as FOREX AB (org. no. 516406-0104) with a registered main activity of payment institution rather than bank, and records branches in Denmark and Finland from April 2022; FOREX no longer appears in the register of institutions covered by the Swedish deposit guarantee, which is maintained by the National Debt Office (Riksgalden). It operates around 80 currency exchange stores across the Nordic region. During 2012, the 16 branches were acquired from Western Union (one in Sweden, one in Finland and thirteen in Norway). Forex Bank AB was a wholly owned joint-stock bank of the Friberg family. At March 2017, before the banking business was transferred, Forex Group had total assets of over SEK 9 billion.
