Santander Group (NYSE: STD) is a banking group centered on Banco Santander, one of the largest banks in the world. Founded in Northern Spain in 1857, Santander has a successful history in retail and commercial banking and has grown to become the fourth largest bank in the world by profits and eighth by stock market capitalisation. The company serves over 90 million customers and 3.0 million shareholders through a network of more than 13,600 branches worldwide. Its presence is concentrated in 9 major markets: Spain, Portugal, Germany, the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Argentina and the US. Retail banking - the main aspect of Santander's operations - generates 82% of the group's profit. In 2008, the Santander Group achieved another important milestone with the acquisition of the US bank Sovereign, with strong presence in the retail banking market in the north east of the country.

Santander develops its business in three core areas:

Continental Europe: The main commercial units are: the Santander network with 2,934 branches, Banesto (1,773 branches), Santander Totta in Portugal with 763 branches and Santander Consumer Finance, operating in Spain, Germany, Italy and the Nordic countries.
United Kingdom: Following the acquisition of Alliance & Leicester and Bradford & Bingley's branch network and retail deposits in 2008, Santander has become the third largest bank in the country in terms of deposits.
Latin America: Santander is the largest financial franchise in the region, and one of the leading banking groups in Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Argentina. In Brazil, following the integration of Banco Real, Banco Santander Brazil secured its position as the third largest private bank in the country, with over 3,600 branches and 22 million customers. Santander also has subsidiaries in Puerto Rico, Colombia and Uruguay.
USA: The bank bases its business mainly on retail banking in this area, through Sovereign Bank. As of December 31, 2009, Sovereign had 722 branches and 2,359 ATMs.
