Banco Popular Español (BPE) was founded in 1926 and is one of the five largest banking groups in Spain with total assets of €158.21 billion at March 2012. BPE offers wholesale and retail banking services through a network of more than 2,200 branches, 32 Mundocredit offices and around 3,000 ATMs primarily in the Spain, Portugal and France. The bank also has representative offices in Italy, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, London, Hong-Kong, Morocco, Chile, United States, Canada and Venezuela. The Group consists of a controlling company (Banco Popular); two foreign banks (Banco Popular Portugal, and Totalbank, operating in the United States) and regional banks (Banco de Andalucia, Banco de Castilla, Banco de Credito Balear, Banco de Galicia, and Banco de Vasconia). Banco de Andalucia operates in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia; Banco de Castilla in the center Spanish regions of Castile and Leon; Banco de Crédito on the Balearic Islands; Banco de Galicia in the north-western Spanish region of Galicia; and Banco de Vasconia operates in the Basque Country. The Group also controls Banco Popular Hipotecario, a wholly-owned subsidiary specialising in property financing; Bancopopular-e, a wholly-owned subsidiary which is an Internet bank; and 60% of Popular Banca Privada, a private banking unit. In 2010, the Group signed a strategic alliance with Crédit Mutuel for the provision of joint services to customers in their main strategic markets (France, Germany, Spain and Portugal) by setting up a new banking platform with over 120 branches and over 500 employees distributed across Spain, in which each institution has a 50% stake. In 2012, Banco Popular Español, S.A. completed the acquisition of 100% of Banco Pastor, the second oldest bank in Spain established in 1776. Key Statistics
