Banco Azteca S.A., Institución de Banca Múltiple is one the largest banks in Mexico with over 16 million savings accounts and 19 million credit accounts. It specializes in micro-loans and depository services. It offers current and savings accounts, personal and car loans, payroll loans, mortgages, credit cards as well as business loans, insurance products, online and mobile banking and payment services. It also offers personal and group loans through Micronegocio Azteca and asset-backed loans through Presta Prenda. With 40,000 employees, the company serves customers through a network of about 1,730 branches in 778 municipalities – the second largest branch network in Mexico. The Bank also has operations in Peru, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Panama. Banco Azteca was established in 2002 and operates as a banking subsidiary of Mexican specialty retailer Grupo Elektra; both companies are part of the larger Grupo Salinas. In 2005, Banco Azteca became the first Mexican bank with branches outside the country in Panama. In 2007, Azteca entered in new markets such as Honduras and Argentina. In 2008, the Bank started its operations in Peru and Brazil. In 2016, Banco Azteca do Brasil S.A. was liquidated by Central Bank of Brazil. As of September 30, 2017, Banco Azteca had MXN 134.925 billion (US$7.4 billion) in total assets.
