Banco Azteca is one the largest banks in Mexico in terms of coverage. The Bank specializes in micro-loans and depository services. With over 17,000 employees, the company serves more than 15 million customers through a network of over 1,400 branches - third largest branch network in Mexico. Internationally, the Bank has operations in Peru, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama and Brazil. Banco Azteca was established in 2002 and operates as the banking subsidiary of Mexican specialty retailer Grupo Elektra; both companies are part of the larger Grupo Salinas. In 2005, Banco Azteca became the first Mexican bank with branches outside the country, Banco Azteca in Panama. In 2007, Azteca entered in new markets such as Honduras and Argentina. In 2008, the Bank started its operations in Peru and Brazil. As of September 31, 2011, Banco Azteca had US$3.8 billion in deposits and $5.34 billion in total assets.
