Top Banks in Europe 2022
Below is a list of the largest banks in Europe ranked by total assets at the end of 2022. HSBC Holdings remained Europe's biggest bank with $2,864.59 billion in assets, narrowly ahead of BNP Paribas, with Credit Agricole Group third. France and the UK each place six banks on the list, followed by Germany with four and Spain and the Netherlands with three each. Assets shown for UBS Group are adjusted for its takeover of Credit Suisse, agreed in March 2023, so Credit Suisse does not appear as a separate entry. The ranking covers the 35 European institutions included in S&P Global Market Intelligence's list of the world's 100 largest banks; the hundredth bank in that global ranking held $302.22 billion in assets, so smaller European banks fall outside it.
