SBS Bank (Southland Building Society) is registered bank which retained its mutual building society structure. In October 2008, Southland Building Society gained a bank registration and was renamed SBS Bank to reflect this change. The company provides a broad array of financial products and services including savings accounts, call accounts, personal and home loans, agribusiness and rural loans, investments, online banking as well as term life insurance, funeral cover insurance, house insurance, income protection insurance, travel insurance, contents insurance, critical condition insurance, private car insurance and pleasure craft insurance. In October 2010, SBS Bank merged with Hastings Building Society (HBS). In 2013, SBS Bank was named Financial Institution of the Year at the Roy Morgan Research Customer Satisfaction Awards. For the year ended March 31, 2026, it reported total assets of NZD 6.7 billion and member deposits of NZD 4.5 billion, with members' equity of NZD 569 million, a total capital ratio of 18.0% and a Fitch credit rating of BBB+, upgraded from BBB. The company operates ten branches, eight in the South Island and two in the North Island. SBS Bank was established on 23 March 1869 and is headquartered in Invercargill.

In September 2026 SBS Bank listed ten branches: Invercargill, Gore, Dunedin, Southern Lakes, Riccarton (Christchurch), Northlink (Christchurch), Nelson and Blenheim in the South Island, and Tauranga and Hastings in the North Island. The branches formerly operated at Queenstown, Cromwell, Timaru, Ferrymead and Papanui in Christchurch, Hamilton, Napier and Havelock North have since closed.
