Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. (SMFG) is one of the largest financial services groups in Japan. Since April 2018 the group has used SMBC as its master brand and is referred to as SMBC Group, while Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group remains the legal name of the holding company. As of March 31, 2026, it had total assets of ¥ 328.511 trillion (US$2.05 trillion), deposits of ¥ 185.674 trillion and loans and bills discounted of ¥ 117.629 trillion. The company employs approximately 123,000 people. The Group shares are listed on Tokyo Stock Exchange, Nagoya Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange.
Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group. It was established in April 2001 through the merger of two leading banks, The Sakura Bank and The Sumitomo Bank. SMBC provides a complete range of financial services including retail and corporate banking, investment banking, asset management, securities trading and other commercial banking services. The Bank has three regional headquarters in Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region as well as subsidiaries in Canada, China, Indonesia, Russia and Brazil. As of March 31, 2026, SMBC employed 28,030 people and operated 455 domestic and 20 overseas branches, with non-consolidated total assets of ¥ 265.6 trillion.

SMBC Friend Securities Co., Ltd. was merged into SMBC Nikko Securities Inc. on January 1, 2018.
Sumitomo Mitsui Asset Management Company merged with Daiwa SB Investments Ltd. on April 1, 2019 to form Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management Company, Limited.
Cedyna Financial Corporation was renamed SMBC Finance Service Co., Ltd. on July 1, 2020 upon merging with the former company of that name, and SMBC Finance Service was merged into Sumitomo Mitsui Card Company, Limited in April 2024.
