HSBC India is one of the top foreign banks in the country. HSBC’s history in India can be traced to the Mercantile Bank of India, which opened its first office in Mumbai in 1853.

Today, the Bank provides a complete range of banking products and services to corporate and retail customers through 32 branches across 20 cities in India. HSBC India employs around 47,000 people in the country across its banking, investment banking and capital markets, asset management, insurance, software development and global resourcing operations. The Reserve Bank of India approved twenty new branches for the bank in January 2025, and branches in Amritsar, Indore, Vadodara, Lucknow, Nagpur and Surat had opened by June 2026. The company offers savings accounts, fixed deposits, personal and business loans, home loans, education loans, debit and credit cards, NRI services, life and non-life insurance, investments, financial planning, internet and mobile banking. It also offers cash management, treasury and capital markets services, custody and clearing services, trade and factoring services and institutional and private banking. As of March 31, 2026, HSBC India reported total assets of INR 4.82 trillion and deposits of INR 2.49 trillion, compared with INR 3.79 trillion and INR 2.23 trillion a year earlier. HSBC India is part of London based HSBC Holdings plc. HSBC completed its acquisition of L&T Investment Management in 2022 and launched Global Private Banking in India in 2023. As of September 2026, the chief executive of HSBC India was Hitendra Dave.
