China Merchants Bank (CMB), headquartered in Shenzhen, is the biggest bank in southern China. It focuses on the development of retail banking, wholesale banking, SME business and non-interest income business. The company was named the “Best Wealth Management Business in China” by The Asian Banker and “Best Universal Bank for Investment Banking in China" by Securities Times. CMB is one of the largest credit card issuers in the country, with 97.45 million active credit cards and 70.11 million active credit card users at the end of 2025. At the end of 2025 it served more than 220 million retail customers and 3.62 million corporate customers through 143 branches and 1,801 sub-branches in the Chinese mainland, with more than 120,000 employees and retail assets under management of over CNY 17 trillion. Outside the Chinese mainland the bank operates branches in Hong Kong, New York, London, Singapore, Luxembourg and Sydney, a Melbourne branch that operates under the Sydney branch, and a representative office in Taipei. In 2008, China Merchants Bank became the first Chinese bank to open a branch in the United States. CMB subsidiaries include CMB Financial Leasing, China Merchants Fund, Wing Lung Bank and CMB International Capital. The Bank was established on April 8, 1987 and was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2002 and 2006, respectively. As of December 31, 2025, the company had total assets of CNY 13.07 trillion, customer loans of CNY 7.26 trillion and customer deposits of CNY 9.84 trillion. The market capitalization of CMB reached US$68 billion as of April 2017.
