United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) is one of the oldest banks in the country. It is one of the largest banks in Nigeria and in Sub-Saharan Africa, and its shares are listed on the Nigerian Exchange under the ticker UBA. UBA is a full service bank offering a broad range of financial products and services to corporate, commercial and retail customers. It offers deposit products, loans, mortgages, debit and prepaid cards, asset finance, payment solutions, money transfers as well as cash management, treasury and capital market services, trust services, pension management, investment banking, mobile and online banking (U-Direct) and other services. UBA reports more than 45 million customers, served through over 1,000 branches and customer touch points. In 2017 the company had about 12,500 employees and served over 14 million customers through more than 1,000 branches and touch points, 1,740 ATMs and 13,500 POS terminals in Africa; the bank’s website reported 2,669 ATMs and 87,223 POS terminals in 2025. UBA is the only Sub - Saharan African bank with an office in the U.S. (New York). The Bank operates in 20 African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, and it also has operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and the United Arab Emirates, where it opened for business in Dubai in 2022. The group describes this footprint as 24 countries across four continents. UBA Capital (Europe) Limited is a London-based investment banking and asset management company. The licences UBA obtained to operate in Mali, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique and Congo Brazzaville have since become operating businesses, and all four countries are part of the group’s African network. The Bank’s shares are widely held by local and foreign individuals, as well as institutional investors. At September 30, 2017, UBA Group had total assets of N3.771 trillion (US$10.4 billion), customer loans of N1.596 trillion and customer deposits of N2.520 trillion. For the year ended December 31, 2024 the group reported gross earnings of N3.19 trillion, profit before tax of N803.7 billion, profit after tax of N766.6 billion, total assets of N30.3 trillion, customer deposits of N21.6 trillion and shareholders’ funds of N3.419 trillion. In its results for the first quarter of 2026, filed with the Nigerian Exchange, the group reported total assets of N33.13 trillion, customer loans of N7.17 trillion and customer deposits of N24.14 trillion at March 31, 2026.

UBA’s issued share capital has since risen from 34,199 million to 44,196 million ordinary shares, following rights issues in November and December 2024 and in July to September 2025 undertaken to meet the Central Bank of Nigeria’s March 2024 minimum capital requirement of N500 billion for banks with an international authorisation, so the percentages above no longer reflect current ownership.
