HBOS plc is a financial services company in the UK. It is the holding company for Bank of Scotland plc, which operates the Bank of Scotland and Halifax brands in the UK, as well as HBOS Australia and HBOS Insurance & Investment Group. In January 2009, HBOS became a member of the Lloyds Banking Group. HBOS continues to operate as a separate organisation within the new group. Lloyds Banking Group has stated that the new group will continue to use 'The Mound' as the headquarters for its Scottish operations and will not cease the issue of Scottish banknotes. HBOS was created in September 2001 from the merger of Halifax plc and Bank of Scotland, becoming the fifth largest financial services provider in the UK. In 2006, the HBOS Group Reorganisation Act 2006 transferred the assets and liabilities of Halifax to Bank of Scotland, which became a standard plc. Halifax then became a trading name of Bank of Scotland.
