Barclays PLC (NYSE: BCS) is a global financial services company engaged in retail banking, credit cards, corporate banking, investment banking, wealth management and investment management services. It has operations in more than 50 countries throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America and serves over 50 million customers worldwide. The company was formerly known as Barclays Bank and changed its name to Barclays PLC in 1985. As of 30 June 2010, Barclays had total assets of €1.94 trillion. In 2008, Barclays acquired Lehman Brothers North American investment banking and capital markets businesses. In 2009, Barclays completed acquisition of PT Akita, a privately owned bank with ten outlets in three cities in Indonesia. In 2010, Barclays completed acquisition of Standard Life Bank. In April 2010, Barclays PLC acquired Italian credit card business of Citibank International Bank. In March, 2011, Barclays agreed to acquire Egg’s UK credit card assets. In March 2010, the Company reorganized its activities to form three business groupings: Global Retail Banking (GRB), Corporate and Investment Banking and Wealth Management (CIB & Barclays Wealth), and Absa. Absa is one of the largest financial institutions in South Africa. CIB & Barclays Wealth businesses provide a wide range of products and services to affluent individuals and corporate, government and institutional clients all over the world.
