HSBC Bank Australia Limited is an Australian bank, authorised as a deposit-taking institution by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA). On July 31, 2026 HSBC announced that it would close its retail banking business in Australia over the following 18 months, and applications for new retail products and services have ceased. It provided a comprehensive range of financial products and services to retail and commercial customers through 37 branches and offices (June 2015) in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It offered everyday banking and deposit accounts, home loans, personal and car loans, foreign exchange, financial planning, share trading, margin lending, online banking, international banking services as well as trade finance, treasury and financial markets, payments, cash management, securities custody and other services. Its insurance products included home and contents insurance, car insurance, travel insurance, landlord insurance and life insurance. HSBC Bank Australia started operations in 1965 and was granted a banking licence in 1986. As of December 2014, it had total assets of $25.886 billion, customer loans of $16.850 billion and customer deposits of $22.348 billion. APRA's monthly authorised deposit-taking institution statistics for July 2026 recorded A$69,230.1 million of total residents assets on its Australian books.

Closure of retail banking in Australia
Under the closure announced on July 31, 2026, home and personal loans have been sold to Pepper Money, which is expected to manage and service them from the first half of 2027. Credit cards, transaction, savings and term deposit accounts, foreign currency accounts, investment services including WorldTrader and HSBC Invest, insurance products and the HSBC Premier service are being wound down, and new applications are no longer accepted. The Joondalup branch in Western Australia closed on July 30, 2026.
HSBC Bank Australia Limited remains an authorised deposit-taking institution on APRA's register current at August 10, 2026, and HSBC continues to offer corporate and institutional banking in Australia. The branch and office network, the December 2014 balance sheet and the November 2015 credit ratings shown above predate the retail closure.
