Banco del Bajío, S.A., Institución de Banca Múltiple (or BanBajío) (MEX: BBAJIOO) is a niche financial institution with a focus on commercial banking for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and agribusiness. It is one of the largest commercial lenders in the Bajio region, which comprises the central Mexican states of Guanajuato, Jalisco (Guadalajara), San Luis Potosí, Querétaro and Aguascalientes. The Bank has strong positions in Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City. With over 4,100 employees and more than 560,000 customers, it has about 300 branches and over 580 ATMs with presence in 28 of the 32 states of Mexico. BanBajio’s customers can also use 240 branches and over 1,440 ATMs of Banca Afirme. The company’s growth plans include a branch expansion to other areas of Mexico beyond its regional focus. In June 2012, Banco Sabadell sold its 20% ownership in Banco del Bajio to Singapore state investment firm Temasek Holdings (Private) and Mexican shareholders for EUR 157 million. Banco del Bajío was established in 1994 and is headquartered in Leon, Mexico. It is the eighth largest bank in the country as measured by deposits and lending as well as one of the 60 largest banks in Latin America. Salvador Onate Ascencio is the Bank's founder and the largest individual shareholder. As of March 31, 2017, the company had total assets of MXN 179.855 billion (US$10 billion) and loan portfolio of about MXN 130 billion (US$7.2 billion). The company’s market capitalization is MXN 35 billion.
