FirstRand Limited (or First Rand Group) (JSE: FSR) is a financial services provider based in South Africa. It is the holding company of FirstRand Bank. At June 30, 2025, the Group employed 50,717 people and operated 767 branches and 5,772 ATMs and automated deposit terminals. There are a number of leading financial services franchises within Group, such as Rand Merchant Bank (RMB), First National Bank (FNB), WesBank and Ashburton Investments. Rand Merchant Bank is the South African market leader in M&A, private equity and infrastructure finance and has consistently been rated first in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Annual Survey. Wesbank is a market leader in asset-based finance and fleet-management solutions. First National Bank is one of South Africa's largest retail and commercial banks. FirstRand operates subsidiaries in South Africa and the neighboring countries including Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho and Zambia. It also has branches and representative offices in Australia, India, the UK, Dubai, China, Kenya and Angola. It was the only South African bank with a branch in India, and that branch was reported as being in the process of being wound down in the results for the year ended June 30, 2025. FirstRand was formed in its current form in 1998, through the disposal of Anglo American’s interests in First National Bank and Southern Life, and the merger of these assets with Rand Merchant Bank and Momentum. As of June 30, 2025, the Group had normalised total assets of R2,586.5 billion (US$145.5 billion), advances net of credit impairments of R1,748.6 billion and deposits and debt funding of R2,181.9 billion. Normalised earnings for the year were R41.8 billion and normalised return on equity was 20.2%.

Later developments

FirstRand's United Kingdom operations comprise the specialist lender Aldermore, acquired in 2018, and the motor-finance business MotoNovo. First National Bank Ghana is reported among the group's regulated entities, while First National Bank Tanzania no longer appears among them in the results for the year ended June 30, 2025. On June 10, 2025, FirstRand announced that it had received regulatory approval to acquire selected banking assets and liabilities, and employees, of HSBC's South Africa branch, transferring that corporate and multinational portfolio to the group's corporate and investment banking division, Rand Merchant Bank.
