Banca Carige

Banca Carige S.p.A. - Cassa di Risparmio di Genova e Imperia and its subsidiaries (or Banca Carige Group) was one of the leading financial institutions in Italy and the largest bank in Liguria until it was merged into BPER Banca S.p.A. in November 2022. With approximately 4,800 employees, it served more than 1 million retail and corporate customers through a network of over 570 branches and 706 ATMs (June 2017) across Italy and one branch in Nice, France. About 90 branches were planned to be closed by early 2018. The Bank had locations in Liguria (Genoa, Savona, Imperia, La Spezia), Lombardy, Piedmont, Aosta Valley, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Tuscany, Marche, Umbria, Sicily, Apulia and Sardinia. It offered a wide range of services including bank accounts, personal and car loans, mortgages, debit and credit cards, internet, phone and mobile banking, asset management, insurance and pension products. Banca Carige S.p.A. was the parent company of Gruppo Banca Carige. The Bank was founded in 1483 and was headquartered in Genova. In 2013, Arca SGR, a privately owned investment manager, acquired Carige Asset Management SGR. In 2014, Banca Carige sold its two insurance units, Carige Vita Nuova SpA and Carige Assicurazioni S.p.A, to Apollo Management Holdings LP. In 2016, Cassa di Risparmio di Savona, Cassa di Risparmio di Carrara and Banca Carige Italia were absorbed by Banca Carige S.p.A. As of March 31, 2017, the company had total assets of EUR 26.760 billion and customer loans of EUR 18.04 billion.

Main shareholders (06/2017): Malacalza Investimenti SRL (17.59%), Volpi Gabriele (6%). The shareholdings shown are historical; Banca Carige ceased to exist as a separate company on completion of its merger into BPER Banca S.p.A. in November 2022.

Banca Carige no longer exists as a separate bank. On 19 August 2022 the boards of BPER Banca S.p.A., Banca Carige S.p.A. and Banca del Monte di Lucca S.p.A. approved a plan for the merger by absorption of the two Ligurian banks into BPER Banca; the European Central Bank authorised the merger on 4 October 2022 and the merger by incorporation was completed in November 2022, which BPER states made it the third largest banking group in Italy. The former Carige branches now trade as BPER Banca.
