KfW (formerly KfW Bankengruppe) is a state-owned development bank and one of the leading promotional banks in the world. Global Finance magazine ranked it the world's safest bank for the sixteenth consecutive year in its 2025 survey. KfW is Germany's most important promotional bank for private customers, enterprises, cities, municipalities and non-profit and social organisations. One major focus of its work is the financing of business start-ups and small and medium sized enterprises. The company’s business activities include Domestic Promotion, Export and Project Finance, Development Finance and Special Tasks. KfW does not hold customer deposits and refinances its lending business within the international capital markets. With 9,137 employees at the end of 2025, KfW Group has locations in Frankfurt, Berlin, Bonn and Cologne as well as 80 offices worldwide including New York, London, Mexico City, Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Brussels, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Windhoek (Namibia), Nairobi (Kenya), Accra (Ghana), Abu Dhabi, Beijing and Singapore. KfW banking group is among global leaders in the field of climate and environmental finance with approximately 36% of KfW's current new lending. The company was founded in 1948 as part of the Marshall Plan. At 31 December 2025, KfW had EUR 540.7 billion in total assets, compared with EUR 545.4 billion a year earlier. Promotional business volume in 2025 was EUR 98.0 billion, of which EUR 62.0 billion was domestic promotion and EUR 24.2 billion export and project finance; group profit was EUR 1.0 billion and both the total and core capital ratios stood at 27.7%.
