Arbejdernes Landsbank

Arbejdernes Landsbank was a Danish full service retail bank established in 1919. It was one of the ten largest banks in Denmark with over 260,000 private and commercial customers, 1,100 employees and 70 branches across the country.

On October 27, 2025 Sydbank A/S, Arbejdernes Landsbank and Vestjysk Bank A/S entered into a merger agreement, with Sydbank as the continuing legal entity, renamed AL Sydbank A/S, and its head office in Aabenraa. The Danish Competition and Consumer Authority approved the merger on December 1, 2025 and the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority approved it on December 5, 2025, satisfying all conditions for completion. The merger was registered with the Danish Business Authority on December 8, 2025 and shares were exchanged on December 12, 2025, after which Arbejdernes Landsbank ceased to exist as a separate bank. On completion, former Sydbank shareholders held 57.15 percent of the combined bank, former Arbejdernes Landsbank shareholders 39.00 percent and former Vestjysk Bank minority shareholders 3.85 percent. The merger agreement stated that the combined bank would be among the five largest banks in Denmark, with total lending of DKK 137 billion, deposits of DKK 207 billion and total credit intermediation of DKK 375 billion.

Generally, Arbejdernes Landsbank was a bank for private customers, associations and small and medium-sized enterprises. It offered deposit and lending products, insurance, payments and trade finance, securities, asset management and capital market services, internet banking and more. Arbejdernes Landsbank was an unlisted shareholding company with more than 24,000 private shareholders. The Group’s two wholly-owned subsidiaries were Handels ApS Panoptikon and AL Finans A/S, which specialized in car financing, leasing and factoring. As of June 30, 2017, the Bank had total assets of DKK 46.1 billion (US$7.2 billion), deposits of DKK 33.9 billion and loans of DKK 21.4 billion.
